Search Engines/Databases

Embarking on a quest?

Here are some links to search engines to assist in finding whatever you're looking for. I try to include a brief note of the search engine, something a little more descriptive than merely the site's name. If you have any input that you wish to pass along to me; follow the e-mail link below. Queries can be made directly to sites which include searchable forms:

*Alta Vista (http://www.altavista.digital.com)
This search engine is relatively new. Designed by DEC, it utilizes their latest technologies. Features a straight-forward interface for defining/re-defining searches. It's one of the fastest sites around!

*Channel Hong Kong: Hong Kong Search Engine (http://www.chkg.com)

Check out 'What's New' in Hong Kong, their companies and The Far East. This site is good for general searches too. The search form code is provided, so check this site for details. There's only 3 days left before the changing of sovereignty in July '97, so it's your last chance to visit a non-communist Hong Kong!

*Excite (http://www.excite.com)
This site categorizes site by concepts, by looking up themes on a searched site and summarizes it for the user. This method might turn up sites that may not be exactly what you're looking for.

*Lycos (http://www.lycos.com)
Started at Carnegie Mellon University, it soon outgrew it's surroundings and split off and became a successful commercial site. Like Yahoo, this site has been around for a while. Although it's becoming full of ads (like its contemporaries), it's still a popular site.

*Magellan: McKinley Group's Internet Guide (http://www.mckinley.com)
This site serves not only as a search database, but also as a review guide. Websites listed here have been reviewed and have a little editorial write-up on them.

*Nerd World Media (http://www.nerdworld.com)
This site is a catgeory-based system. It has a dedicated following of users. Don't let the name discourage you from visiting it!

*SavvySearch (http://guaraldi.cs.colostate.edu:2000/form)
Not exactly a search engine in it's own right, but rather a collection of them. This site 'borrows' from other search engines to find your query. Called a 'meta-search' engine, it draws info. from about 19 search engines all at once. You're guaranteed that you'll find what you're looking for. The drawbacks to this are; searches tend to be slow, and the same information (from different sources) will turn up more often than needed.

*WebCrawler (http://webcrawler.com)
This site has a fast search engine, one of the fastest. It started at the Univ. of Washington, but has since become a part of America Online.

*Yahoo! Canada (http://www.yahoo.ca)
This a recent addition to Yahoo's growing list of complement services. This is the Canadian version of Yahoo! and obviously has greater content pertaining to Canadians. Relatively fast, especially if you're located in Canada!

*Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com)
Started by graduate students at Stanford Univ. Yahoo is one of the original search engines. Websites are exhaustively categorized by topic; allowing for cross-indexing. With 14 main topics; its database is quite large. Sites have a small description about them (like this one!); which can be found in a few seconds.
